Sheffield: a history of manufacturing excellence

As a company we are extremely proud to be able to use the Made in Sheffield mark on our Mirage e-liquids. You can find 19 different places called Sheffield across 6 different countries and 3 different continents, but Sheffield, South Yorkshire is where we call home. 

 

Sheffield is also home to both the world’s oldest Football Club and the world’s oldest football ground, has more trees per person than any city in Europe and was the birthplace of the bands Pulp and Arctic Monkeys, and actors Sean Bean and Michael Palin.  Undoubtedly what Sheffield is most famous for however, is its long and proud history of high quality manufacturing.

 

From the first UK production of crucible steel in 1740, discovery of Sheffield Plate in 1743 and the invention of Stainless Steel by metallurgist Harry Brearley in 1913, Sheffield has been renowned as a city of world-class producers since at least the 1400’s, and earned its nickname as the original ‘Steel City’. 

As the city entered the 20th century, the city leaders recognised the value of the words ‘Made in Sheffield’ and in order to protect this legacy formed the Sheffield Defence Committee in 1900, registering the word ‘Sheffield’ as a trademark in many countries so that it could not be misused.  Sheffield is the only city in the UK whose name is protected due to its global reputation for quality and the selling power of its name.

 

Sheffield remains at the forefront internationally in metals and metal products used in the most demanding applications, as well as many other businesses at the very cutting edge of their respective industries.  Made in Sheffield is one of the worlds great brands and permission to use the Made in Sheffield Mark is strictly limited to companies who are based and manufacture within Sheffield and have been able to demonstrate a commitment to producing high-quality products.

 

With this legacy behind us, we strive for the very best standards and quality at every step.  Our purpose-built laboratory and bottling facility operate to ISO:90001 standards and produce high quality e-liquid products from the very best ingredients we can find, backed by full traceability and independently tested to ensure safety, quality and compliance with regulations before being registered with the MHRA.
